10 Reasons Your AC Isn't Working

As summer is nearing and if you're the one who likes things cool indoors like 68 to 72 degrees - you'll possibly be running your AC a lot.

However, it has been observed that they don't always function when you need them to.

You may seek an AC repair in Riversidebut it's irritating to wait for an AC to get fixed when it's 90+ degrees outside! Here are the 10 commonest reasons why your air conditioner may not work-

1. Your thermostat batteries are dead.

Often it has been observed during air conditioning service in California that the thermostat isn't displaying anything, as the batteries are dead.

The solution is to switch them out. Changing the thermostat batteries should be your first step if the screen is blank and you don't know why. Make sure your thermostat is set to "cool." If it isn't, you're either running the heat or you're just spinning the fan!

2. The indoor disconnect switch is off.

This could have been put off by accident, particularly if it's in your attic or garage. Do ensure that the disconnect switch is set to "on" before performing any further troubleshooting. This simple solution could be all you need.

3. The outdoor disconnect switch is off.

Building codes necessitate that switches be installed next to your AC's indoor and outdoor units. The outdoor one might have been switched off by accident, and it's very easy to verify and reset if required.

4. You've got a tripped circuit breaker.

Check your breaker box. If one of the breakers is tripped, it might be the one that connects to your HVAC system. Reset it and try the AC again. Breakers often trip when a circuit is overloaded. If the breaker trips again do shut off other equipment that may cause the problem. If you don't understand why, it keeps tripping, call a technician for air conditioning maintenance in California to diagnose the problem.

5. You blew a fuse.

You could have blown two fusesthe literal fuse connected to your thermostat and, if you're angry about your AC not working, an internal "fuse." A blown fuse between an AC and your thermostat is like a bad battery in your car. You have to replace it before the machinery can do its thing. Unless you've got special training, this isn't a solution to try yourself.

6. You've got a blown transformer.

Same actions to be followed as the blown fuse. The outcome is the same. Your AC won't work until you change the bad transformer.

You may have a bad contractor in the outdoor unit too. That's what often leads to a blown transformer, so you'll have to switch that off too. Wiring issues, like a short in the wire, can also lead to this problem.

7. Starting components are on the fritz.

To function properly, major air conditioners depend on at least two capacitors inside the outdoor unit. These components - one is technically the "start" capacitor and the other is the "run" capacitorresembling giant batteries. They hold power and let your air conditioner turn on and stay on.

8. Your indoor and/or outdoor coils are dirty.

Sometimes, the air coming out of your vents isn't cool at all. It could be due to a dirty coil.

You've got two AC coils, one in your outdoor unit and one in your indoor unit. They can be dirty if you don't have your HVAC system serviced on a regular basis.

9. You need to change your dirty filter.

If you aren't changing or cleaning your air filter per the manufacturer instructions, it's also becoming dirty. Over time, filters get so clogged with dust and gunk that they limit airflow to your HVAC system.

Other reasons your coil might freeze up could be any of the following-

  • Closing half or more of your supply vents

  • Refrigerant leaks

  • Improper refrigerant charge

  • Obstructed return or supply vents

  •

10. Somebody damaged the HVAC components.

When you bang on something enough, it'll break. Heating and air systems are no exception. So, your landscaper may have accidentally busted the refrigerant line. Or maybe you pulled a wire by error when you were working on an unrelated project.

Maybe your kids threw a heavy ball into your outdoor unit and damaged something.

The best solution to all these problems is to get your HVAC system serviced regularlyMost of these issues are preventable.
